AMP Milestones
October 2010
The Atlanta Music Project launched its first program in October 2010 in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. With support from the Coca-Cola Foundation, AOL Artists, and more than 100 individual donors, 30 elementary school students from the Perkerson neighborhood met five days per week at the Gilbert House, where they received two hours of daily music instruction in strings, winds, brass, choir, and music theory — all tuition-free.
February 2011
AMP presented its first-ever concert at the Museum Bar in the Mechanicsville neighborhood. Featuring Gilbert House students singing in a choir and performing as a symphony orchestra, the event brought together the many stakeholders who had quietly supported the organization’s vision and purpose during its first year.
September 2012
With support from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, AMP launched the AMP Academy, a private lesson program for AMP’s most talented and dedicated students. Participants were admitted through an audition process and received weekly private lessons from AMP teaching artists. They also performed solo recitals and participated in masterclasses with renowned musicians.
January 2013
AMP launched AMPlify, a choral music program operating alongside the orchestra program. In partnership with Ivy Preparatory Academy, students met after school four days per week. The first AMPlify concert took place in March 2013.
August 2014
With support from Chick-fil-A and State Line Films, AMP violinist Kamali Brooks and the AMP Youth Orchestra are featured in the first commercial during ESPN's broadcast of the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Watch it here.
October 2015
As part of the Atlanta Beltline's Art on the Beltline program, the Atlanta Music Project's AMPlify Choir performs a full concert at the Fourth Ward Park pavilion. Watch it here.
July 2015
In cahoots with Camille Love, Aisha Moody, and the Gilbert House staff, AMP was featured on Knock Knock Live, where rapper and actor, Common, surprised CEO Dantes Rameau with donations to AMP of $50,000, a passenger van, and musical instruments.
February 2016
Members of the AMP Youth Orchestra were invited to Mexico City by the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation to participate in an international youth orchestra under the direction of Maestro Dudamel himself.
June 2016
AMP launched the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and summer music school. With the goal of creating unforgettable summer music camp experiences for aspiring young musicians, the AMP Summer Series featured guest artists, concerts, masterclasses, and music day camps. The first guest artist was pianist Terrence Wilson.
November 2016
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selected AMP as a 2016 Neighborhood Builder, an honor that included a $200,000 grant and professional development support.
July 2018
Members of AMP’s Senior Youth Orchestra performed alongside Atlanta hip-hop artist T.I. during his Tiny Desk Concert. Watch here.
October 2018
With support from Cricket Wireless, AMP celebrated the launch of the AMP Youth Orchestras and Choirs with a performance featuring R&B singer Monica at The Gathering Spot. Designed for experienced middle and high school musicians, these ensembles represented the first step in developing premier youth ensembles at AMP that would perform at the highest level.
May 2019
AMP opened its first headquarters: the Atlanta Music Project Center for Performance & Education in the Capitol View neighborhood, just down the street from the Gilbert House. Thanks to lead gifts from the Chestnut Family Foundation, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, and Steve and Jill Wadley, AMP now had its own space for young musicians to develop their craft. November 2021
AMP launched its College & Career Services Department. Supported by the Chestnut Family Foundation, the department provides AMP students with one-on-one college and career advising, college application support, and college scholarships.
January 2022
AMP launched the Preparatory Schools program. Consisting of band, orchestra, and choir ensembles, the Preparatory Schools serve beginner elementary school musicians. The program became the foundation of a student’s pathway at AMP, progressing through junior ensembles, senior ensembles, and eventually college or career opportunities.
October 2023
AMP presented the “AMP Experience,” a one-day concert and festival featuring food trucks and merchandise at Pullman Yards. Showcasing all AMP ensembles, the event culminated in a joint performance featuring all 350 AMP students performing together simultaneously.
April 2024
The AMP Senior Youth Orchestra traveled to Canada to perform its first international concerts. The ensemble performed two concerts in Ottawa in an artistic collaboration with École secondaire publique De La Salle.
July 2024
The AMP Senior Youth Choir traveled to New Zealand to compete in the 2024 World Choir Games. Under the direction of conductor B.E. Boykin, the ensemble competed in the Open Youth Choirs category, achieved the top score and a Golden Diploma Level VI, and was crowned Category Winner.
June 2025
For the 10th anniversary of the AMP Summer Series, Grammy-winning soprano Karen Slack performed with the AMP Summer Series Festival Orchestra and Choir under the direction of John Young Shik Concklin at a packed Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church.
December 2025
AMP was featured, for the fourth consecutive year, on Monica Pearson One-on-One Holiday. The episode featured the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra and Choir, along with interviews with AMP leadership and alumni.
